Understanding Hypothyroidism & Hashimoto’s
Are you constantly exhausted, struggling with brain fog, or finding it impossible to lose weight?
“Exhaustion and brain fog were the first and most annoying symptoms of my hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s”
~ Dr. Anya
You might be dealing with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, two conditions that impact millions of people worldwide, 90% are women and most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 50.
Conventional medicine often treats these conditions with medication alone, but a holistic functional medicine approach looks deeper—addressing the root causes and offering a path to true healing.
In this blog, we’ll explore what hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s are, their root causes, and in future posts we will discuss how a holistic functional medicine approach can help you restore natural balance to your body.
What is Hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, leading to slowed metabolism and widespread symptoms such as:
- Fatigue
- Weight gain
- Depression and brain fog
- Hair thinning
- Cold intolerance
- Dry skin and brittle nails
- Constipation
The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition where the body mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland and attacks thyroid hormones.
What is Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis?
Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system produces antibodies that target and destroy thyroid tissue over time. This leads to chronic inflammation, decreased thyroid function, and fluctuating thyroid hormone levels.
Symptoms of Hashimoto’s can vary but often include:
- Swelling in the thyroid (goiter)
- Mood swings and anxiety
- Joint pain and muscle weakness
- Digestive issues such as bloating and IBS
- Increased sensitivity to cold
- Unexplained weight gain
Many people with Hashimoto’s go undiagnosed for years because conventional testing often misses the early stages of the disease.
Yet the earlier the diagnosis, assuming this correlates to less tissue destruction, the better the likelihood of remission with holistic methods.
In the next blog post we will discuss how a holistic functional medicine approach can help you restore natural balance to your body!
