#1/10 Root Cause of Hashimoto’s - Your Gut

The Gut-Thyroid Connection: Why Healing Your Digestion Is Key to Reversing Hashimoto’s

If you’ve been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, chances are your symptoms feel all over the place. From fatigue and brain fog to bloating, constipation, and food sensitivities—it can be hard to know where to even begin.

But if there’s one place that’s almost always involved in autoimmune thyroid disease, it’s this:

Your gut.

In fact, nearly 80% of your immune system lives in your gut. That means any dysfunction in your digestive system—whether it’s leaky gut, dysbiosis, or chronic inflammation—can directly fuel your autoimmune response.

What Is Leaky Gut?

Your intestinal lining is designed to be selectively permeable—allowing nutrients in while keeping harmful substances out. But when this lining becomes damaged (a condition known as increased intestinal permeability or leaky gut), things start slipping through the cracks.

Undigested food particles, toxins, and bacteria escape into the bloodstream where they don’t belong—setting off a red flag for your immune system.

This ongoing immune activation can trigger or worsen autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s.

Common Gut Imbalances Linked to Hashimoto’s

Many of the patients I work with are dealing with undiagnosed gut issues like:

- Dysbiosis (imbalanced gut flora)

- SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)

- H. pylori or parasitic infections

- Chronic constipation or bloating

These gut issues often go unnoticed in traditional labs, but they are major root causes when it comes to thyroid dysfunction and chronic inflammation. I will discuss these in detail in a future blog post.

How to Start Healing Your Gut

The good news? Your gut has an incredible ability to heal—when you give it the right support.

3 Ways to start healing your gut:

1. REMOVE common triggers

Cut out inflammatory foods like gluten, dairy, refined sugar, and alcohol—these can damage the gut lining and worsen autoimmune flares.

2. REPAIR + REBUILD with gut-healing foods

Incorporate:

- Grass-fed Bone broth ideally homemade - recipe in my book {link below} (rich in collagen and amino acids to soothe the gut lining)

- Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi ideally homemade - recipe in my book {link below} (to repopulate beneficial bacteria)

- Prebiotic fiber from foods like garlic, leeks, asparagus, and artichokes

3. REDUCE stress (a hidden gut disruptor)

Chronic stress can suppress digestion and worsen leaky gut. Incorporate daily practices like:

- Deep breathing

- Gentle yoga

Why This Matters

Your gut doesn’t just digest food—it trains your immune system, regulates inflammation, and supports your thyroid hormone conversion. When your gut is inflamed or imbalanced, your thyroid suffers.

But when you begin healing your digestion? You lay the groundwork for true transformation—not just fewer symptoms, but lasting resilience and vitality!
